After a recent Social retreat, our team decided it was time to make room for personal projects that would both expand our skill sets and challenge us creatively.
We divided into three teams of two and captains were determined via coin toss. Teams chose a theme for the work and we gave ourselves 3-months for ideation, design and execution.
The projects culminate in a studio presentation and will be released into the wild this December. At that point, captains will switch and the next round of ideas will commence. After the second round of projects, we plan to restructure the teams to keep ideas fresh and encourage collaboration across disciplines.
Below is a breakdown of our current projects:
Team 1: Weather Jams
Weather Jams is an experimental music discovery app for iOS that creates song mixes based on your current weather, or a weather combination of your choosing.
As a studio, we’re using the project as an opportunity to refine our app creating abilities as well as to provide ourselves with a platform to experiment with unique, simplified navigation patterns.
Our goal is to provide a single tap gesture that allows users to choose weather type and temperature returning relevant music based on their selection. For example, if “Rainy and Cold” are chosen, mellow selections such as Bon Iver or Midlake would be returned. “Sunny and Hot” may provide upbeat, pop music.
The scope of the project includes the app design and development, submission to the app store, marketing site design and development and social media marketing campaign.
At the end of the project we will open source various components including the api integration and icon sets. A process post will also be created on Social’s blog to show the design process, technologies used and hurdles we had to jump.
Team 2: Celebrate Small
In our constant pursuit of more, we sometimes overlook the sweetness that fills our daily lives. “Celebrate Small” is our way of encouraging the world to embrace the small, special wonders that surround us.
- Reinvigorate and reconnect the studio with our mission
- Demonstrate the power of design for good — focus on the value, dignity and impact possible in our work
- Expand our knowledge of print and web platforms as we develop a fully branded campaign
- Push our conceptual thinking, showing that we offer substance beyond style
- Initiate a movement that is bigger than us while providing an outlet for play and discovery
We’ll explore a variety of time-honored techniques, such as letterpress and screen printing, in concert with the latest e-commerce solutions and social media platforms. The project will have two components:
Personal — Comprised of a kit that includes custom, handcrafted items that facilitate the celebration.
Community — A virtual proliferation of the celebration via items from the kit combined with the real-time sharing of the “Celebrate Small” community via our blog, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
We’ll be tracking our progress via a blog at celebratesmall.com. Kits will initially be distributed to existing and potential clients but may eventually be for sale on the website.
Team 3: Social Stock
After more than a decade photographing our community, and the world, this project aims to collect our most special images and make them available for purchase or download as Social Stock.
We’re using the project as an opportunity to explore new photographic techniques and self-initiated work while we fill the gaps that we personally have in terms of needed stock. We’d also like to give back to the design community by providing select images available for free download.
Photos will be made available in our online photo gallery powered by SmugMug.
Our first step is to customize our online gallery then move on to curating the images that will make up the final collection. Once this is complete we’ll provide access to this gallery via the Social website.
Stay tuned for the unveiling which is now only a matter of weeks away (cough > Socialites get to work < cough)…
